VOIP overview

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology to convert voice communications into digital packets for delivering voice over a data network.

The data network used is the internet. The data network allows nodes, also known as communication endpoints to share resources. The endpoints exchange data with each other using the data link, and the connection between them is either by a wired medium or a wireless medium. For information on the wired data link, refer to VoIP Over Wired Networks and for data link over a wireless network, refer to VoIP over Wi-Fi.

The benefits of using VoIP is to eliminate the dependency of having a Telecom provider to connect to each other. The requirement of VoIP is to have a reliable and secure Internet connection with good bandwidth, reliable network equipment, and access points.
