What's New

This section summarizes the new features in this release.

What's New in VST Android 2.1.0

The VST 2.1.0 solution extends interoperability with Vocera on-premises solutions for up to 5000 contacts. In addition to the previous interoperability with the Vocera Voice Server, VST 2.1.0 interoperates with Vocera Messaging Platform 5.2.0 and Vocera Collaboration Suite 3.1.0. In this environment, VST, VCS, and badge clients can exchange text messages, VST clients can call any other client, and VCS clients and badge clients can call other VCS or badge clients. In all cases, the interaction is seamless, and users are not required to know the type of client with which they are communicating.

Most of the VST features introduced in this release facilitate the extended on-premises interoperability; specific features are highlighted below.

VST-VMP Interoperability Features

  • Support for badge users who desire messaging capabilities (linked user profiles)

Link the profiles of VS badge users with native VST profiles to provide on-premises users access to a full handheld messaging client and the convenient voice experience of a wearable device.

  • VST compatibility with VCS features

    • Ability to receive terminated notifications from VMP and VST

If the total number of individual users (the number of members in any groups plus the number of individual recipients) exceeds 50 individuals, the message is terminated; that is, recipients will receive the message, but they will be unable to respond.

    • Support for VCS-initiated multiple-choice responses (MCRs)

    • Ability for VST and VCS users to send attachments to each other.

Attachment types are now consistently limited to images for all device users, and an attachment with an accompanying text is now sent as two messages.

VST Handheld Client Features

  • Create or edit a subject for a text message

A subject allows VST to sort messages to or from the same people into different conversations. For example, if you are exchanging messages with the same user about both a consultation and also on-call support, using a different subject for the two groups of messages allows everyone to view the threads as independent conversations.

  • Add new recipients after a text conversation has already started

You can now add recipients to a conversation at any time. For example, if you are using text messages to discuss a patient with one colleague, you can easily add another colleague to the conversation to get an additional opinion.

  • Reply to conversation recipients who are not contacts in your Directory list (anonymous users)

In some situations, you may receive a message sent to both you and also a person who is not one of your contacts. This situation occurs when the sender of the message has a contact who is not in your own contact list and includes that person as a recipient of the message. You may reply to all users in this situation, even though you may not initiate new messages to users who are not in your own contact list.

  • Reply to VCS messages that have multiple choice response options

Vocera Messaging Platform users can send messages that require a recipient to choose a single response from a list of possibilities (multiple choice responses). The VST clients allow you to respond to these messages appropriately.

  • Note changes to message priority

All VST clients now display messages as either Normal or High priority, instead of as Normal or Urgent. The VCS client continues to support Normal, High, and Urgent priorities. If you receive an urgent message from the VCS client, the VST client displays (and announces it, if you have a handheld client) as high priority.

  • Customize notification tones and vibration duration based on message priority

By default, all clients indicate any high priority message (or an urgent message from the VCS client) with an exclamation mark icon on the recipient's screen. In addition, handheld clients play a special tone or vibration when you receive a normal or high/urgent priority message. You can customize both the tone and vibration on the application Settings page.

  • Delete a conversation

You can now delete only a conversation instead of individual messages.

  • Add a group to your favorites list

Earlier releases allowed you to add only users to the favorites list.

  • Note changes to message length

The message body now supports 3000 characters on all clients.

  • Email and SMS message recipients now have unlimited replies to a message

Earlier releases allowed you to send only a single response.

  • The message summary screen now displays the organization of the sender

The organization was not displayed in previous releases.

  • Changes to attachments

A message with an attachment is now sent as two successive messages, and attachment types are limited to images (no PDFs).

  • New system messages

A system message is now sent to all affected message recipients in the following situations:

    • A subject is edited, a recipient is added, or a message is forwarded
    • A user in an existing conversation is removed from an organization or sub-group by a system administrator
