The RXE segment contains specific order encoding information from the pharmacy. This includes dosing information as well as any specific administration instructions. This segment and its children (RXR and RXC segments) must be sent in RDE messages but not ORM messages. RXR and RXC segment layouts are common between RDE and ORM messages.

The value contained in RXE-2.1 identifies the item to be administered to the patient. This value must match the Hospital ID field in Vocera Edge Master Drug File. For multi-component orders containing RXC segments, this field may be left blank.
This field is used by Vocera Edge to perform dose checking against the item scanned at bedside. The system requires that the clinician documents at least this amount as given to the patient.
This field is used by Vocera Edge to perform dose checking against the item scanned at bedside. If this value is present, the system requires that the clinician document no more than this amount as given to the patient.
This field is used by Vocera Edge to perform dose checking against the item scanned at bedside. This value must match the configured Dosing Units field in Vocera Edge Master Drug File in order for the system to perform dose checks. If there is a mismatch between the ordered give units and the formulary item’s configured dosing units, then the nurse will be prompted to enter the amount being administered and no checks will be performed.
Vocera Edge uses this field for comprising the order description.
This field contains any pharmacy entered or physician entered instructions that should be displayed to the clinician during the administration process. This field may repeat. Vocera Edge database can contain a total of 2000 characters in the instruction field.
For IV medications, this field contains the expected rate for the infusion.
